Our Lady of Guadalupe (English: Our Lady of Guadalupe, Spanish: nuestra se ñ ora de Guadalupe) was given by Catholics to an Indian youth named Juan Diego cuahtlatoatzin in Tepeyac, Mexico, in December 1531. Later, it was considered as the "Virgin Mary" by the Catholic Church.
On December 9, 1539, the Virgin Mary appeared to a humble Indian, Juan Diego. The virgin asked him to show his will to the bishop, that is, to build a small church where he appeared. When the bishop asked for a sign to prove that the message was true, the virgin asked Juan to pick roses on the mountain. You know, it was in the severe winter, and there would be no flowers at all. As expected, when Juan went up to the mountain, he saw flowers blooming all over the mountain. He filled his long coat with picked roses and went to see the bishop. When Juan saw the bishop, opened his coat and scattered the roses in front of the bishop, he saw not only the roses, but also a statue of the virgin printed on the long coat.
In the next few years after the appearance of the Virgin Mary, the naturalization of indigenous people increased significantly, and the local culture was also open to the gospel of Christ. The virgin of Guadalupe can be said to be one of the pillars of the Mexican faith. Guadalupe's Virgin Mary's Day falls on December 12 every year.
Juan Diego is a farmer near Mexico City in the Americas. He lives in the village of Tolpetlac, nine miles from the Church of Tlatelolco. His wife died early and had no children. His uncle was alone and there was no one to support him. They lived together. He was baptized seven years ago and was very devout.
On Saturday, October 9, 1531, he went to the church with the stars in the sky to receive the sacrament and mass. When he passed by the foot of Tepeyac mountain, it was already dawn. Suddenly, he heard a song, which was more mellow and pleasant than the bird's voice. He seemed to have reached heaven. The song suddenly stopped, and there was silence around him. He seemed to wake up from a dream. A soft voice came from the top of the mountain: "Juan, Juan." He was not afraid, but excited and ran to the sound.
When he reached the top of the mountain, he saw a lady standing on the cliff and waving to him. The woman's face was gentle, shining like the sun, and her voice was soft and humble. He prostrated himself before her and listened to her. She said, "my child, where are you going?" He said he would go to the holy church to see mass and listen to the priest's instructions. She said, "I am the Virgin Mary, the mother of God. I hope to build a holy church here to give God's grace. I will listen to the prayers of those who trust me and relieve their pain. Go to the bishop quickly and convey my wishes to him! If you do the things I ask, I will make you happy." He kowtowed again and said, "I will definitely complete the task. I will say goodbye to you now."
He went straight to the Archdiocese of Mexico City, the new Franciscan named Juan zumarac. As soon as he saw the bishop, he knelt down and made a statement, telling what he had seen and heard in detail. After hearing this, the bishop looked pale and thought for a while, then he said, "this matter is very important. We will study it and give you a reply."
He immediately returned to the top of the mountain, where the Virgin was waiting for him. He fell to the ground and said: "I met the bishop. He listened carefully to my description and said that he would study. It seems that he does not believe me. I am humble and stupid, and my tongue is clumsy. It is hard to believe what I say. Please find someone who is respected and can speak." The virgin said: "this is a trivial matter. You can fully bear it. When you go to see the bishop in my name, you say that it was my dead Virgin Mary who ordered him to do so." Juan said, "I will certainly tell you the Bishop's reply before sunset tomorrow." Then he went home to rest.
After the mass the next day, the people had dispersed. Juan met the bishop, and with tears in his eyes, he conveyed the order of the mother in heaven. The bishop asked him many questions, and he answered them all. Finally, the Bishop said, "if I believe that you are sent by the virgin, you must give me a proof." June went back to the virgin again and said, "the bishop doubted me and needed a piece of evidence to believe what I said was true." The virgin said, "come and get it tomorrow. I'll wait for you here!"
As soon as he got home, he saw that his uncle was ill, and he was very ill. He hurried to see a doctor. The doctor said, "it's pestis." My uncle said that he had not long passed away, and asked him to go to ask the priest to finish his work tomorrow.
The next Monday, he was supposed to send evidence for the virgin, but it was important to help people die well. He had to get up to the church and pass the mountain at the foot of the mountain. It happened that the mountain was at the intersection of the church and the Bishop's office. He was afraid that the virgin would see it and hurried around the road to the church. Unexpectedly, the virgin just came down from the mountain and stopped him and said, "where are you going, my child?" He was startled. He didn't know whether it was pain, shyness, or fear. He immediately knelt down and complained, "mistress, I've made you sad. My uncle got pestis and won't live long. I'll go to ask for a doctor for him. I'll send you evidence early tomorrow morning."
The virgin comforted him and said, "don't be afraid and don't be sad. Your uncle will not die for the time being. He has recovered." (later, I learned that at this time, his uncle was all right.)
After hearing these words, Juan felt at ease, asked his mother for forgiveness, asked the virgin for evidence, and immediately went to see the bishop to make him believe it. The virgin said, "when you climb to the top of the mountain, there are flowers everywhere. Pick some for me!" Although the season is cold and winter, there will be no flowers, but he did not hesitate to run, and as soon as he reached the top of the mountain: ah! Such a large area of roses, all kinds of roses, are competing for beauty, fragrant, and dew is floating on the petals. He rolled up his coat and filled his pocket.
He returned to the foot of the mountain and held up the roses in his pocket for the virgin to see. The virgin picked up some of them, smiled, and put them back to the original place and said: "send them to the bishop! My child! This is my evidence. Before you see the bishop, don't open your clothes!
He quickly set off on the road and headed for Mexico City. He smelled the sweet smell of roses all the way, held the confidence of success, sang while running, and held tightly to his clothes, fearing to lose one.
Juan went to the Bishop's house and waited in the concierge. The servants were curious and always wanted to see what was in his pocket. Juan left and right hid from them. After some pulling, he could not stop the enemy and had to open a slit in his clothes. Ah! Roses, water, cold December, where to get so many flowers! They went up to grab it, and the fragrant rose turned into an oil painting. They were stunned and hurried to report to the bishop and outline the reason. The bishop then knew that the evidence he had requested had arrived and summoned him immediately. As soon as Juan entered the door, he shouted, "these blooming roses were picked by the Virgin Mary who sent me to the top of the mountain. They are the evidence he gave you." He shook his mind and the roses rolled all over the ground. At the same time, the portrait of the virgin appeared on his mind. This is the portrait of the virgin of Guadalupe that is preserved in the Mexican lobby today.
A miracle occurred. The bishop and all the people present knelt down and kowtowed, praised and cried. The bishop tearfully asked the virgin for forgiveness. Then, he stood up and took off the coat with the portrait of the Heavenly Mother emperor from Juan's neck and put it in the small hall. Juan stayed in the Bishop's house for one day for consultation. The next day, he accompanied the bishop to inspect the building address pointed out by his mother.
After the completion of the new church, the holy image was moved there for people to look up to. The whole city was shocked. People worshipped and watched it in an endless stream. They agreed that no one with the highest painting skills in the world could draw such a wonderful portrait. In the next 20 years, 9 million people in Mexico City converted to Catholicism, and Catholicism flourished.
Less than seven years after the birth of the virgin of Guadalupe in 1531, more than 8 million Indians converted to Catholicism. Since then, the virgin of Guadalupe has been deeply rooted in the belief of the Mexican people and has become a major pillar of Mexican culture.
