Matthew 26:36-46
Gethsemane garden is the first stop on the bitter road that Jesus walked. When I mentioned Gethsemane, I couldn't help thinking of the extreme pain the Lord Jesus suffered there. "My heart is very sad and I almost die." (Matt 26:38) when I mentioned Gethsemane, I couldn't help thinking of the tears and prayers of the Lord Jesus there. "Jesus was extremely hurt, and prayed more earnestly. Sweat dripped on the ground like big blood spots." (road 22:44)
1、 The pain of the Lord Jesus
"Jesus came with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and said to them, sit here until I go there to pray. So he took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee with him, and became very sad. He said to them, my heart is very sad, almost to death. Wait here, and watch with me." (Tai 26:36-38)
Gethsemane, which means "oilpress", as the name suggests, is "suffering". The Lord Jesus often goes there to pray, so Judas also knows this place, "because Jesus and his disciples often go there to gather." (about 18:2)
When the Lord Jesus and his disciples came to Gethsemane, "they became very sad." (Matt 26:37) he said to his disciples, "my heart is so sad that I almost die." (Tai 26:38)
What makes Jesus so sad and painful?
As the omniscient son of God, he knows what is waiting for him in front of him; As a perfect son of man, he is experiencing unbearable pain.
A. Death
Jesus knew that he would be arrested in a few hours, and then go through six consecutive trials. He would be tortured and whipped day and night. Roman whip with bone spurs and barbs, such cruel whip will soon make people flesh and blood. He will be crowned with thorns, with blood flowing, and then he will be crucified.
The cross is an extremely cruel punishment. The tortured prisoner's arms were stretched out, his hands were nailed to the cross, his feet were nailed to the cross together, and a wooden board was placed under his feet. The prisoner's weight is concentrated on the nails in his hands. Due to gravity, his lungs on both sides are compressed and he has difficulty breathing. So the prisoner should step on the plank under his feet, lift his body up with great effort, breathe a breath, and then hang down. Then step on the plank under your feet to lift your body up and breathe in. This process often lasts for several days until the prisoner suffocates due to continuous blood loss and exhaustion. The punishment of the cross was only applicable to slaves and criminals who committed heinous crimes. Because it was too cruel, it was soon abolished.
Psalm 22 describes in detail the cruel punishment of the cross: "I was poured out like water. My bones were disjointed. My heart melted like wax in me. My energy dried up like a tile, and my tongue stuck to my gums. You placed me in the dust of death. Dogs surrounded me, and evil parties surrounded me. They pierced my hands and feet. I can count my bones. They stared at me. They divided my coat and cast lots for my coat." (Ps. 22:14-18)
The Lord Jesus knew that he would suffer such a terrifying death.
In addition to the extreme physical destruction, the Lord Jesus also endured extreme mental torture:
Judas betrayed him, Peter denied him, and his disciples abandoned him; People humiliated him, teased him, mocked him, laughed at him, spit on his face, and the glorious son of God was insulted by sinners in every way.
This scene is described in detail in Psalm 69, "abuse broke my heart. I was full of sorrow. I expected someone to sympathize, but there was no one. I expected someone to comfort, but I couldn't find one." (Ps. 69:20)
At the same time, the Lord Jesus also watched helplessly as his mother's heart was "pierced by a knife" (Luke 2:35) under the cross, but he was unable to do anything, so he had to entrust his mother to his disciple John, "(he) saw his mother standing next to his beloved disciple, and said to his mother," mother, look at your son. "He also said to the disciple," look at your mother. "(John 19:26-27)
B. Bear the blame
The Lord Jesus knows that all the sins and filthiness of the world will be piled on him, and he will bear the sins of the world and bear the curse of sin.
"The next day, when John saw Jesus coming to him, he said, 'look, the lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world'." (John 1:29)
"God makes those who are innocent (ignorant of sin) sin for us." (Lin Hou 5:21)
"Everyone who hangs on a wood is cursed." (add 3:13)
All the sins of the world, murder, theft, robbery, rape, fornication, greed, hatred, jealousy, lies, slander... The son of the most holy and glorious god, he never knew what sin was. Now all the sins of mankind must be piled on him.
"Holy, holy, holy, Lord of hosts. His glory fills the whole earth." (match 6:3)
"Lord, who dares not to fear you and not to give glory to your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship before you." (Qi 15:4)
"No one can see the Lord without holiness." (Lai 12:14)
Even Moses could not see the glory of God, "because people cannot live when they see my face." (Exodus 33:20) but now this holy and flawless son of God carries all the sins and filth of the world. For Jesus, the son of God, we filthy sinners will never understand what this means, and people will never be able to share his loneliness and pain.
C. Separation
Because the Lord Jesus bore the sins of the world, the holy and righteous God turned away from him, and the traffic of eternal love of the Trinity god in his three in one was interrupted at that moment. This is the deepest pain of the Lord Jesus that the world has never experienced in the same way.
Jesus' greatest pain is not physical destruction or spiritual torture, but his sad cry that tore his heart on the cross: "my God, my God, why do you abandon me?" (Tai 27:46)
The extreme pain of the Lord Jesus at all levels of body and soul is the reason why he is "very sad and almost dead" in Gethsemane garden. Because of the particularity of his perfect God and perfect man, no one can really understand and share his pain, and no one can even share his prayer.
2、 Jesus' prayer
"He walked a little forward, fell on his face and prayed," my father, if it is feasible, please let this cup leave me.
But don't do what I want, just do what you want. '" (Tai 26:39)
The Lord Jesus left his disciples and walked forward a little. He fell on his face and prayed to the father.
The Lord Jesus prayed all his life. He often got up and prayed in the wilderness before dawn; He prayed when he was baptized before the ministry began; Pray when choosing the twelve disciples; When he fed five thousand people with five loaves and two fish, he looked up to heaven and prayed; Praying in front of Lazarus' tomb, he also taught disciples how to pray. Before the end of the Ministry, he prayed for himself, his disciples and later believers; When the emergency in Gethsemane garden approached, he cried and prayed, and even sweat fell like drops of blood; Now he is still praying for us in heaven.
"My father, if it is feasible, please let this cup leave me."
This cup is the bitter cup of the cross that the Lord Jesus will bear. Drinking this cup means: pain, sadness, rejection, separation, abandonment, loneliness, death, burial.
This cup is the cup of Wrath of the LORD God for the judgment of sin. Drinking this cup means that the Lord Jesus will bear the wrath of God for sin and the judgment of God for sinners!
"My father, if it is feasible, please let this cup leave me. However, do not do as I want, but as you want." (Tai 26:39)
The prayer in Gethsemane garden is the most difficult prayer of the Lord Jesus. How to understand the mood and feelings of the Lord Jesus at this time is the key to correctly interpret the prayer in Gethsemane garden.
Many people explain the prayer of Jesus in Gethsemane garden, thinking that Jesus experienced a painful struggle in Gethsemane garden, and he prayed to the father to remove the bitter cup of the cross, that is, Jesus did not want to go to the cross. At last, Jesus prayed that he was willing to obey God's will. Some even said that because Jesus asked God to remove the cup of the cross, God did not listen to Jesus' prayer.
If so, the Hebrew record is confusing: "when Christ was in the flesh, he cried loudly, prayed in tears and begged the Lord who could save him from death, and was answered because of his piety." (come 5:7)
"On the day of his flesh, Christ prayed and pleaded with those who could save him from death with heroic cries and tears, and was heard because of piety." (LV Zhen Chinese translation)
Therefore, the above explanation is not the original intention of Jesus' prayer in Gethsemane garden.
The author has always advocated literalinterpretation, that is, interpreting the Bible literally, according to the context, combined with the historical background, with reference to grammatical structure and rhetorical usage. Most of the scriptures can be correctly explained by this interpretation. The reference of the above and the following also needs to examine the overall principles of the whole Bible. And sometimes it needs to be a little flexible, not rigid, not dogmatic. Considering the use of rhetoric, metaphor, style, etc., it also leaves a certain space for logic and reasoning.
For example, after the Lord Jesus talked with the Samaritan woman, the woman was so excited that she threw the jar into the water and ran to the Samaritan City, panting to testify to the people in the city: "look, there is a man who told me everything I have done. Is this the Christ?" (about 4:29)
The sentence "is this the Christ?" literally means neutral, neither positive nor negative. She is not sure whether Jesus is the Christ. Let everyone come out to help her identify it.
According to Greek grammar, the answer is No. Because there are two negative words in Greek: ou and MH, the interrogative sentences induced by the latter often need to get a negative answer.
μ?τιο?τ???στιν?Χριστ??; (CouldthisbetheChrist?)
"Is this Christ?" The answer is: no! He is not Christ!
However, the above two explanations are not accurate. The truth is: the Samaritan woman is very confident that Jesus is the Messiah that the Israelites hope for! Otherwise, it can't explain her excitement of throwing cans into the water and running to the city.
But who would believe the testimony of a woman with a bad reputation? So the Samaritan woman spoke to the crowd in a timid tone, with her habitual inferiority complex. We believe that one day when you see her again in the sky, she will look up and show the beauty of her confidence.
So, the prayer of the Lord Jesus“
My father, if it is possible, please let this cup leave me.
”What exactly does it mean?
It is the Lord Jesus who confides his strong feelings of extreme pain to the father, so as to get comfort from the father, and the painful cry of the Lord Jesus on the cross, "my God, my God, why do you abandon me?" Similar.
There are two types of questions in Rhetoric: realquestion and rhetorical question.
Asking directly is a real question, expecting a positive answer. For example, "where is the king of the Jews who was born? We saw his star in the East and came to worship him." (too 22)
Hypothetical questions are hypothetical questions, and positive answers are not expected. For example, "who can separate us from the love of Christ? Is it tribulation? Is it hardship? Is it coercion - / coercion? Is it hunger? Is it naked? Is it danger? Is it sword?" (Rom. 8:35) (refer to Lai Ruohan's practical Sutra interpretation)
Similarly, the "if" in the prayer of the Lord Jesus, "my father, if it is feasible, please let this cup leave me", is the same as the question in the question.
A hypothesis of "if" is really possible. For example, "if you stay here tonight, if he is willing to do his duty as a relative for you tomorrow morning, let him do it. If not, I swear by the living Lord, I will do my duty for you." (3:13)
Another assumption of "if" is that this possibility will never happen, such as the prayer of the Lord Jesus, "my father, if it is feasible, please call this cup away from me." (Tai 26:39)
The Lord Jesus' prayer seems to say to God and father, "my father, is there any other way to save sinners except for me to go to the cross? But in any case, I am willing to fully obey your will."
The answer to the question "is there any other way to save sinners except the cross": no! Not at all!
Therefore, God did not prepare the second plan (PlanB), for which Jesus was clear from beginning to end. If there is only one purpose for the Lord Jesus to incarnate and come into the world as a man, that is to be crucified and achieve forgiveness of sins and eternal salvation for sinners.
This is what the angel said to Joseph in his dream before Jesus was born, "she (Mary) is going to have a son. You should name him Jesus, because he wants to save his people from their sins." (Tai 1:21)
It is also the testimony of John the Baptist when he first saw Jesus: "look, the lamb of God, who takes away (carries) the sins of the world." (about 1:29)
Paul said, "God chose us in Christ before the creation of the world." (Eph 1:4) God's selection is based on the grace of the cross of Jesus Christ. Therefore, the first messianic prophecy in the whole Bible predicts or establishes the crucifixion of Jesus Christ: "the descendants of women will hurt your (Satan) head, and you will hurt his (Christ) heel." (Gen 3:15)
In a thousand years before the Lord, David describes in detail the crucifixion of Christ in Psalm 22: "I was poured out like water, and my bones were disjointed. 22:14-18)
Although David's life has gone through tribulations and has been chased and killed many times, he has never fallen down like this in his life: "they pierced my hand and my foot... They divided my coat and cast lots for my coat."
If Psalm 22 is a description of the physical pain of Christ's crucifixion, then Isaiah 53 is a description of the spiritual pain of Christ's crucifixion:
"Indeed, he bears our sorrow and bears our pain. But we think he is punished and beaten and tortured by God. But he was hurt for our sins and bruised for our sins. Because of his punishment, we have peace. Because of his whip, we have been healed. We are all lost like sheep, each of us turns to his own way. The Lord puts the sins of all of us on him. He is oppressed, but he does not open his mouth when he suffers. He Like a lamb being led to the place of slaughter, and like a sheep being silent under the shearer, so he does not open his mouth. He was taken away because of oppression and judgment. As for his contemporaries, who wants him to be whipped and cut off from the land of the living because of the sins of my people? "
The prophet Zechariah prophesied in the tone of Christ, "they will look to me, which they pierced." (Ya 12:10)
Abraham in the Old Testament offered Isaac and the Passover lamb out of Egypt, all pointing to the cross of Jesus Christ.
When Jesus Christ walked on the earth, he talked to his disciples about his cross many times:
"As Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so will the son of man be lifted up." (about 3:14)
"If I am lifted from the ground, I will attract ten thousand people to return to me." (about 12:32)
Jesus Christ even regarded the cross as his glory: "the time for the glory of the son of man has come. I tell you the truth, a grain of wheat will still be one if it does not fall to the ground and dies. If it dies, it will bear many grains." (about 12:23-24)
Jesus knew the pain of the cross, so he prayed to God the father, "now my heart is sad, what can I say? Father, save me from this time. But I came for this time." (about 12:27)
Jesus prophesied his death to his disciples many times, "the son of man must suffer a lot, be rejected by the elders, chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and rise on the third day." (Lu 9:22; 44; 18:31-33)
When Jesus Christ was tempted, he categorically rejected the shortcut that the devil wanted Jesus to "get the kingdom without going through the cross" (Matt. 4:1-11); In particular, when Peter, Jesus' beloved disciple, gave him similar advice, the Lord Jesus severely rebuked Peter: "Satan, get behind me. You are tripping me. Because you are not considerate of God's meaning, but only considerate of people's meaning." (Tai 16:23)
Jesus Christ and his crucifixion are the core of the gospel! So the Apostle Paul said in his letter to the Corinthian church, "I made up my mind that I knew nothing else among you, only Jesus Christ and his crucifixion." (forest front 2:2)
To sum up, if the incarnation of Jesus Christ has only one core purpose, that is to sacrifice oneself and bleed on the cross, forgive sins for sinners and achieve salvation!
In Gethsemane garden, the cross is in front of you! Jesus Christ cried loudly and prayed with tears to God the father in great pain. How could he pray to the father to remove the cross? Because he "came for this time." (about 12:27)
Therefore, the prayer in Gethsemane garden is the emotional eruption of the Lord Jesus in the fire like trial and heart rending sorrow, and the Lord Jesus' unspeakable pain and feelings to the tears of the lord father and God.
The prayer of Gethsemane garden is the urgent prayer of the Lord Jesus, the prayer of the Lord Jesus' complete obedience, and the prayer of the Lord Jesus' complete victory!
In Gethsemane garden, although the environment is so sinister and gloomy, although the devil is like a roaring lion, and although the disciples are sleepy because of physical weakness, the Lord Jesus still gets comfort and strength in talking to God the father.
Therefore, when the darkest hour comes, the Lord Jesus can firmly say to his disciples, "get up, let's go!" (Tai 26:46)
Let's meditate on the pain, tears, tears and prayers of the Lord Jesus in Gethsemane garden, and then let's thank him from the bottom of our hearts for what he has done for us!
Let us also follow his footsteps. When facing trials and difficulties, the first thing to do is to fall on the ground and pray to him, our high priest Jesus Christ, who has experienced all hardships and completely won!
Lord Jesus, I love you
