Maggi Hambling's sculpture is the result of a decade-long campaign to commemorate women's rights advocates in the 18th century.
The statue featuring a naked woman emerging from a silver sea of women was created by artist Maggi Hambling.
The memorial statue erected to commemorate the iconic British feminist Mary Wollstonecraft (Mary Wollstonecraft) has met with mixed responses online.
The feature of the statue is a naked woman emerging from a sea of silver women, created by artist Maggi Hambling. It was released via live broadcast and was exhibited at Newington Green in Islington, London.
The writer Tracy King tweeted that the statue tried to be "avant-garde" to arouse debate, but it obscured the achievements of human rights activists.
She questioned the decision to commemorate the 18th-century feminist, who wrote the famous 1792 monograph "The Defense of Women's Rights", suggesting that women and men have equal rights and that every woman has an ordinary female image.
Worstoncroft’s achievement is precisely the reason for criticism: it symbolically portrays a naked woman, rather than a vivid depiction of the feminist. "Male sculptures are all well-dressed, because people are concerned about their work and achievements," said a British writer. No one can model or exhibit a naked Newton or Churchill, but Worstoncroft is naked.
