Shapur II (309-379) was the king of the Persian Empire (309-379). During the reign of Shapur II, the Persian Empire's territory extended from the Pamir Plateau in the east to the Roman Empire in the west, becoming the great empire of Asia.
Character's Life
Shapur II (309-379 AD) was the posthumous son of Persian Emperor Hormizd II (some say he was born before his death). In 309 AD, Holmes II attacked the Roman Empire and died in battle. His eldest son Adonasse came to power and was immediately killed. Shapur II became the king of the Persian Empire.
In 337 AD, Shapur II attacked the Roman Empire on the grounds that the Roman Empire opposed the suppression of Christianity by the Persian Empire. Shapur II's persecution of Christianity was indeed true, and since 339, this persecution has evolved into a nationwide ban on Christian faith. In 341 AD, Shapur II signed an alliance with the Armenians in an attempt to make them his accomplices in opposing Rome. In 346 AD, Shapur II led a large army to conquer Upper Mesopotamia. In 348 AD, Shapur II defeated the army of Roman Emperor Constantius II in Cincala and annexed a considerable amount of land. In 351 AD, Shapur II once again signed an anti Roman treaty with the Armenians, but the Armenians soon broke the treaty and turned to the embrace of Rome. In 359 AD, Shapur II captured Sinkara and defeated the counterattack of Constantius II's army. In 362 AD, the new emperor of the Roman Empire, Julian, mobilized the country and led a powerful army to invade Persian territory in 363 AD. He attacked and achieved victory in the Battle of Taixifeng, but was unable to break through the city. During the transition, he was heavily injured by the army of Shapur II in the Battle of Samara, and Julian himself was also killed in battle. Shapur II, as the victor, once again achieved peace with Rome by establishing the Sassanid dynasty's hegemony in Asia. His last war with Rome was between 371 and 376.
Shapur II also attacked Central Asia and fought against the independent Guishuang princes, ultimately surrendering them and making them allies in future foreign wars. The northeastern territory of the Persian Empire reached the present-day Kashgar region of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, People's Republic of China.
During the reign of Shapur II, many cities were established, including Erang Hevare Shapur, which was built on the ruins of the city of Susa that he had destroyed.
In 379 AD, Shapur II passed away, and his brother Aldahir II (another posthumous son of Holmitzd II, also believed to be Shapur II's son) came to power.
