Saint Francis was a famous figure in medieval Italy. He was the founder of the Catholic Franciscan Order and the Franciscan Sisters, hence Saint Francis is also known as Saint Francis. In the 16th century, San Francisco was still a territory under Spanish jurisdiction. They established a military fortress in San Francisco and also established a missionary station in San Francisco, so the historical name continued. San Francisco is also known as San Francisco.
Saint Francis (1182-1226) is a highly influential figure in the history of Western churches and culture, even in modern Western politics, religion, and academia. When Margaret Thatcher, the Iron Lady of Britain, was elected as Prime Minister in the last century, she passionately quoted the famous quote of Saint Francis: "Where there is discord, let us bring harmony. Where there is error, let us bring truth. Where there is doubt, let us bring faith. Where there is despair, let us bring hope." We will not comment on whether Margaret Thatcher's career as Prime Minister has truly implemented such a creed, But she is wise, and although her governing career was only eleven years, her political legacy has influenced the development of Britain in later generations. Saint Francis, then, was even more influential in the course of history.
Saint Francis was a ascetic, and the British philosopher Russell said, "He is one of the cutest people in history.". He was born wealthy and lived a leisurely playboy life when he was young. Frequent feasts and revelry come first. However, the indulgent lifestyle affected the body, leading to reflection and repentance. Once, while riding a horse, he saw a leper on the roadside. Suddenly, immense pity surged from the bottom of his heart. He jumped off the horse with a heartbeat and hugged him, kissing him. From then on, like Shakyamuni under the Bodhi tree, he had a great realization and gave up all his wealth to live in extreme poverty. His father was greatly angered upon hearing this. He was a very successful and influential businessman in the local area, and he could not allow his son to do so. However, in the end, he was helpless and abolished his inheritance rights.
Saint Francis was a person full of joy and enthusiasm. He not only preached, but also wrote poetry and sang. Soon, a group of followers gathered around him, and he enthusiastically traveled to every part of Italy. He went to Spain in Islam, and then to the East to preach for Sultan. Although Sultan received him with courtesy, he still did not change his faith. The movement of Saint Francis combined mysterious contemplation with a fervent missionary fervor, initially considered heretical, but Pope Innocent III felt that this movement was beneficial for the development of the church and recognized this order in 1210 AD. The Pope also maintained a good personal friendship with him and tirelessly sponsored his organization.
Saint Francis's devout religious beliefs and adherence to a simple and impoverished spiritual life also moved some women. After a 16-year-old girl named Gu Lena joined the movement, the Franciscan Women's Order was established, and she was commonly known as the "Poor Lady" or "Poor Gu Lena". Under the efforts and inspiration of Francis, this group of happy and impoverished people established the largest and most influential religious order in the Catholic Church.
Saint Francis often had a solitary and fast lifestyle for up to 40 days and nights. He walked into a natural environment around him to understand the intimate relationship between humans and God's creations, and to integrate himself with nature in his soul. The life he loves includes all animals in the world, and even when walking on the road, he should avoid stepping on small insects. Therefore, he is also a complete vegetarian and an extreme animal protectionist. He died on October 4th, 1226, which became a commemorative fasting day for believers. It is precisely because of his protection and love for animals that this day (October 4th every year) is also designated as World Animal Protection Day.
The Holy One among religious figures is not limited to Saint Francis, but his holiness is not just for his own salvation. He cares more about the salvation of others than for his own salvation. His love and kindness make him the Holy One among the saints. He loves all beings not only because he is a Christian, nor because he wants to be a philanthropist, but also because of his cultivation as a person with natural noble character. No matter how he treats anyone, he has never shown any sense of superiority, even among the many sinners, he considers himself one of them.
However, the successor of Saint Francis did not practice his practice. In the seventh year after his death, a religious tribunal was established, in which countless good people were convicted of heresy and burned to death. The result of Saint Francis's lifelong efforts to do good, he ultimately founded a corrupt church, which is truly unforgettable.
