Lakshmi is a well-known deity in Hinduism and is also respected by Buddhists and also. Her outstanding status in the Hindu pantheon stems not only from her role as the wife of Vishnu (the saver of the Hindu Trinity), but also from her rights as the goddess of wealth, prosperity and good fortune.
Although the artistic description of Lakshmi varies from region to region, local tradition and artistic medium, certain symbols related to Lakshmi make Lakshmi clearly recognizable.
Like the Hindu gods, Lakshmi is often depicted with four arms. The outward palm (usually the lower right arm) is a blessing. She may also use one hand to lift a pot or take a bath, pouring gold coins, indicating material wealth and abundance.
Because of its connection with wealth, the image of Lakshmi is often decorated with coins from South Asia.
Many rulers of the South Asian Kingdom (Hindu and Muslim) issued coins with a statue of a goddess sitting on a lotus
The lotus symbolizes purity and enlightenment and enjoys high respect in Hindu culture. Lakshmi is often depicted holding a lotus bud in one or two of her four arms. It may also make her sit on the lotus or stand on the lotus.
Cambodian art usually depicts Lakshmi as a lonely standing figure holding a lotus bud in temples, while in Vietnamese art she usually sits.
In addition to lotus, Lakshmi is also related to owls and elephants. Gaja-Lakshmi refers to a typical image of Lakshmi, flanked by gajas or elephants spraying water at her (sometimes with coins).
This icon has been found in both Hindu and Buddhist buildings, and Gaja-Lakshmi sculptures are often found in archaeological sites.
Lakshmi is believed to wander the earth during Diwali, and devotees illuminate their houses with oil lamps to welcome her and her good luck and wealth.
Usually on the first and third days, Diwali is not complete without Lakshmi Puja or ritual worship of Lakshmi.
Since Hindus believe that Lakshmi will bring them wealth and good luck, consumption (and entertainment gambling) is common at this time of the year.
