Concorde square has two fountains. The north of the square is Heshen fountain, and the south of the square is Haishen fountain.
"There are two fountains in Concorde square, collectively known as Fontaines de la Concorde. The Chinese translation is: Concorde fountain. Because the square is designed by the architect Hittorf, these two fountains are also known as Hittorf fountain. The south one is called La Fontaine des mers (Chinese Translation: fountain of the sea), and the north one is called La Fontaine des fleuves (Chinese Translation: fountain of the river)."
Concorde square is located in the center of Paris, on the North Bank of the Seine River. It is one of the most famous squares in France. It was built by King Louis XV in the 18th century. At the beginning of the construction, it was named "Louis XV square" to show the world his supreme imperial power. During the great revolution, it was called "revolutionary square" and was used by the French people as a stage to show the destruction of the monarchy. In 1795, it was renamed "Concorde square". In 1840, it was renovated to form such a scale. The square is octagonal, with an Egyptian obelisk standing in the center. It was presented to Charles V by the governor of Egypt. The obelisk is carved out of a whole piece of pink granite. It is carved with Egyptian hieroglyphs, praising the great achievements of the Egyptian pharaohs. There are eight statues around the square, symbolizing the eight major cities in France.
Speaking of the name "Concorde square", there is a history that is not Concord, even bloody. Concorde square was originally named "Louis XV square". The horse riding statue of Louis XV cast in the middle shows the prestige of his reign. At that time, Louis XV, the king of France, ordered the construction of the square to show the world his centralized rule and the supremacy of the imperial power. However, during the French Revolution, it was used by the French people as a stage to destroy the royal power, and a well-known human tragedy was staged here.
The Concorde square was built in 1755 by Jacques ange Gabriel, a royal architect who was working at the court of Louis XV at that time. The project lasted 20 years and was completed in 1775. Cabrier first designed an octagonal square with a length of 360 meters, a width of 210 meters and a total area of 84000 square meters for Concorde square. In order to get a perspective effect, he chose a different plan from those of the Royal Square in Paris. He designed Concorde square as an open square: people can overlook the dancing of the thousand leaves in the tuloli garden and the ripples of the Seine River. At both ends of the square, there are two other masterpieces of cabrier: the French naval headquarters and the l'hotel Crillon, which draw the finishing line for Concorde square. In 1778, at the Creon hotel in Paris, which became a high-end hotel, France once concluded a treaty of alliance and a treaty of friendship with the United States, recognizing the independence of the United States.
However, during the French Revolution in 1789, the statue was pushed down by the revolutionary people, and the guillotine was rebuilt and renamed "revolutionary square". During the reign of terror from 1792 to 1794, the Republican Army executed about 1100 royal members and royalists such as King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette in this square. The guillotine that ended their lives, which was once set in the Concorde square, is said to have condensed the "wisdom" of King Louis XVI, who was decapitated by it. It was originally designed to "execute executed prisoners quickly and painlessly in a humanitarian spirit". Louis XVI never thought that he was also designing his own way of death when he proposed the design of the guillotine. There is a legend: in those days, a group of cattle stopped suddenly when they passed here because of the strong smell of blood. They did not want to pass here and changed their route.
Robespierre, the actual head of the Jacobin government during the 18th century French bourgeois revolution, who sentenced Louis XVI to death, was also a very dramatic figure in French history. He once resigned as a judge because he opposed capital punishment. Later, during the great revolution, he strongly advocated the execution of King Louis XVI by capital punishment. After the execution of Louis XVI, he was no longer satisfied with the trial of the royalists, and all those who could not keep absolute agreement with him became the targets of his elimination. Danton became a victim of this purge movement. Also at Robespierre's suggestion, the head of the government of the New Republic was executed on April 5, 1794 in the Concorde square.
More than a year after Louis XVI was executed, Robespierre, who made outstanding contributions to the French Revolution, was finally put on the guillotine in Concorde square in August 1794. Is there really karma in the dark? Just as Louis XVI designed the guillotine, Robespierre never expected that he would bear the same fate as Louis XVI when he announced his death sentence. This is history. It cannot be predicted, controlled or rewritten.
There are amazing coincidences in history. Those who create history can no longer see it, but those who write history can see it very clearly: Louis XVI, Danton and Robespierre, three people who once held the fate of France, died under the same executioner and on the same square.
When the square was rebuilt, in order to commemorate the end of the war years and meet the people's desire for peace, "revolutionary square" was renamed "concord square".
Concorde square has always been like a big stage for real historical plays. In the past, people came here to watch the terrible massacres of the great revolution. People came here to feel the historical development and appreciate the changes of the city. Standing in the center of the square, you can see the broad Champs Elysees Garden Avenue, the Arc de Triomphe at the end of the road, and the famous national assembly building Le Palais bourbon and La Madeleine on both sides.
In the era of Louis Philippe (1835-1838), the architect Hittorf was ordered to complete the planning and construction of the square. In order to respect the original idea of Jacques ange cabrier, the designer of the square, Hittorf added railings and the following buildings around the square.
City statue
On all sides of the square stand eight statues representing the eight largest cities in France in the 19th century. In the northwest are Rouen and Brest, in the Northeast are Lille and Strasbourg, in the southwest are Bordeaux and Nantes, and in the southeast are Marseille and Lyon.
Marley's steed
Standing at the entrance of the Champs Elysees rural Avenue, it was originally carved by the sculptor coustou for the palace garden of Louis XIV, the sun king, in Mallory. Louis XIV, the king of the sun, decided to build a more secret palace for himself than Versailles in the small town of Mallory, 15 kilometers west of Paris. The designer built many beautiful fountains, pools and sculptures in the vast garden of the palace. In 1794, the statue was transported to Paris from the palace garden of Marriott and then placed in the place de la Concorde. The statue now standing on the square is a replica, while the original is kept in the Louvre.
Concorde square fountain
Between 1835 and 1840, two grand fountains and some ornate monuments were added to the Concorde square. The monument is decorated with a bow pattern and is the symbol of the city of Paris. The two fountains are intended to reflect France's superb navigation and river navigation technology at that time. In fact, these two fountains are only imitations of the fountain in St. Peter's Square in Rome. The north of the square is La Fontaine des fleuves, and the south of the square is La Fontaine des mers.
There is a three-layer fountain on both sides. There are six exquisite bronze carved mermaids on the fountain. Each holds a fish in his hand, and a few meters high water column is ejected from the fish's mouth. The water splashes like floating gauze.
Fountain in Concorde square
Fountain in Concorde square
From a distance, the fountain looks like two giant butterflies with one opposite and the other right. In fact, these two fountains are two groups of large-scale group sculptures that are full of fountains and spray day and night. There are countless fountains in each fountain. In the circular pool, a group of naked goddesses larger than human beings hold golden carp and dolphins along the pool. The large mouths of the fish and dolphins have a fountain with a height of several meters that slants toward the fine sculpture in the center. There are more fountains on the central group of sculptures, which either spray upward or gush downward, creating a landscape of ten thousand springs.
The upper and lower groups of sculptures in the center of the "river god fountain" are mainly River sculptures. The upper layer is a few naked and tender little angels playing in the water, and the lower layer is a beautiful Rhine goddess surrounded by three fairies with different postures, naked upper body and green robes. They are harvest fairies holding grapes, love fairies holding flowers and fruit fairies symbolizing sweetness. The graceful goddess of the Rhine river sits around them with a column decorated with gold reliefs. The column is covered with a saucer shaped spray booth. The reliefs on the spray booth are composed of a circle of gold heads of gods. Both sides of each head are carved with flowing grooves, just like the flowing long hair of the head.
The design and form of the "sea god fountain" are the same as that of the "river god fountain", but the dynamics of all characters are different. The three fairies are the Pearl fairies, the shell fairies and the coral fairies. The main god is the male Atlantic sea god.
