Danae, the daughter of Argos king Acrisius and Eurydice in ancient Greek mythology, gave birth to Perseus with Zeus.
The daughter of the Argos king in Greek mythology
Danae: The daughter of Eurydice and Acres, the mother of Perseus, imprisoned by her father in a bronze chamber.
The oracle said that a son of the daughter of Acrisius would be against him, so Acrisius locked Danae and her nanny in a cellar below the palace (some say in a copper tower). After seeing Danae, Zeus transformed into a golden rain while she was sleeping and copulated with Danae, giving birth to Perseus.
After Perseus was born, Archisios packed the mother and son in a box and threw them into the sea. Zeus, with the help of the sea god Poseidon, prevented the deaths of their mother and son.
The mother and son drifted to Seriphos Island, where they were adopted by a fisherman (also known as a boatman or shepherd) named Dictys. Dictys was the brother of King Polydices. Later, Polydectus attempted to pay attention to Danae, but Danae was protected by Dictys and Perseus.
Polydectus therefore attempted to get rid of Perseus, and ordered Perseus to obtain Medusa's head for him. When Perseus returned home smoothly, Polydectus did not believe that Perseus had succeeded. So Perseus showed him Medusa's head, and immediately Polydectus turned into a stone. Diktis became the king of the island.
Regarding the myth of Danae being imprisoned by his father, Durkheim believes that this actually reflects the taboo of primitive society towards women's menstruation. In the 19th century, Western scholars discovered that among backward ethnic groups in the Americas, Africa, and Australia, there was a widespread phenomenon of isolating teenage girls who had arrived at menarche from society through confinement, with the aim of preventing others from being harmed by supernatural forces contained in their menstrual blood.
