Bartholomew (Greek: Βαρθολομαίος), English: Bartholomew, Christian translation: Bartholomew, meaning "son of Bartholomew", Catholic name St. Bartholomew, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus named Nathanael.
Bartholomew (Greek“ Βαρθολομαίος”, Translated as "Bartholomaios", derived from Aramaic, he was one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. It is generally believed that he is Nathaniel, as he is often listed alongside Philip in the list of the twelve apostles, and it was Philip who led him to believe. In the synoptic Gospels Matthew, Mark, and Luke, Philip and Bartholomew are often linked together without mentioning Nathanael, while in the Gospel of John, the opposite is true. Besides being one of the twelve disciples, Bartholomew was listed as a witness to ascension (Acts 1:4, 12, 13).
In the Gospel of John, Nathanael was a friend of Philip. He was described as initially suspecting that the Messiah came from Nazareth, saying that Nazareth could produce good seeds. (John 1:45-46), but he still went with Philip to see Jesus and declared himself the "Son of God" and the "King of Israel.". According to Syrian tradition, Badoromai was originally named Jesus, so he changed his name to another one. It is said that after Jesus ascended to heaven, Bartholomew brought the Gospel of Matthew to India to preach.
When Jesus appeared to the seven disciples on the shore of Galilee after his resurrection, Nathanael was also present (John 21:2). Finally, he was beaten with a stick, crucified, and killed with a knife by pagans in Armenia.
Bartholomew is an Aramaic name, while Nathanael is in Hebrew. The church legend has it that he preached and performed miracles in many places outside of Judea, and translated the Gospel of Matthew into multiple languages.
Bartholomew and Judas claimed to have brought Christianity to Armenia in the 1st century. Therefore, Armenian churches are known as the Armenian Apostolic Church and they are considered the guardians of the church.
After Jesus ascended, he preached in India, Armenia, and other places, and ultimately died a tragic death in Armenia, being beheaded, skinned, and upside down crucified. The person who descended from the sky to announce the judgment in Michelangelo's famous painting "The Last Judgment" is Bartholomew. The Catholic Church has designated August 24th as its day of worship. Some people say that he has been to China, but he is generally not recognized.
In his works of art, he often portrays himself holding a leather cutter or holding his own skin like Michelangelo's The Last Judgment.
Saint Bartholomew's Day is on August 24th.
