Poseidon (the God of the sea in ancient Greek mythology)
Poseidon (Greek: Ποσειδ ῶ ν、 English: Poseidon) is the sea god in ancient Greek mythology and one of the twelve main gods of Olympus. It is also the God in charge of horses. It is said that he gave mankind the first horse. His horse is a golden chariot driven by a white horse. He is the brother of Zeus and Hades.
When Poseidon is angry, sea monsters will appear in the sea. When he swings his trident, he can not only easily set off huge waves, trigger storms and tsunamis, sink the mainland and break the world, but also smash everything, and even trigger a big earthquake. When his chariot runs on the sea, the waves become calm, and dolphins follow around. Therefore, Greek sailors and fishermen near the Aegean Sea worship him very much. [1]
In the later period of the Roman Empire, Roman gods corresponded with Greek gods. The Roman god corresponding to Poseidon is Neptune, and the Latin name of Neptune originates from him.
Poseidon was the son of Cronus and Rhea, the Titan God. Because Cronus was afraid that his children would overthrow him, every child was eaten by Cronus at birth. Only the youngest Zeus was replaced with stone by Rhea.
Later, with the help of Zeus, Cronus vomited out all his children. They are Hestia, Demeter, Hera, Hades and Poseidon. During the crusade against Cronus, the Cyclops helped Zeus create lightning, created a trident for Poseidon, and created a stealth helmet for Hades (English: cap of invisibility). Helped them overthrow the rule of Cronus. The latter three brothers decided to draw lots to allocate the ruling area. Poseidon won the lot to manage the sea and became the God who ruled the sea.
Poseidon often sits in a car driven by a bronze hoof and golden horse, smashes rocks with a trident, and the clear spring flowing out of the crack irrigates the earth, so that the farmers have a bumper harvest. Therefore, Poseidon is also known as the God of harvest. Although he had a place on Mount Olympus, most of the time he lived in gorgeous palaces in the deep sea. The dolphin, which symbolizes his holy beast, represents the tranquility of the sea and Poseidon's kind divinity. Therefore, Poseidon can bring a smooth climate when he is gentle.
Poseidon was ambitious and belligerent. Not satisfied with his power, he conspired with Hera, Athena and Apollo to drive Zeus from his throne. But the plot did not succeed. Zeus found out that he was demoted to serve a mortal. With the help of Apollo, he built the famous wall of Troy for king laosedon.
On another occasion, he competed with Athena, the goddess of wisdom, for the protection of the city of Athens, so that he could master the wealth of the rich city. The halberd of Poseidon knocks on the sea, and a horse jumps out of the sea; Athena put her spear into the ground, and an olive tree grew on the ground. The horse is the driving force of the chariot, symbolizing war, while the olive tree is a symbol of peace and has considerable agricultural value. Zeus presided over the voting of the gods of Olympus, and Athena won by a majority. Another time he quarreled fiercely with Apollo because of the king of Corinth, and finally ended in victory.
